K&A Canal navigation notes: Friday 6 May 2011

Water Levels
British Waterways have lowered the water level on the pound between Lock 22 at Lower Foxhangers and Seend Top Lock (21) by 70mm (just under 3 inches) from today (Friday 6 May 2011) until further notice to reduce leakage during the piling work that begins on Monday 9 May 2011.

Elsewhere there are water level problems:
March and April this year have been the second driest in 100 years. This coupled with a higher level of boating activity on the canal because of the warm weather and the additional holidays has affected water levels on some sections of the K&A.
On the Long Pound between Devizes and Wootton Rivers the water levels are down more than 6 inches and boaters at Pewsey and Honeystreet are reporting problems moving boats off their moorings because they are stuck firmly on the bottom.
The Summit Level between Cadley Lock (54) and Crofton Top Lock (55) is very low with boaters reporting difficulty getting near enough to the bank to moor and judging by the 'wet-line' on Bruce Tunnel the level has dropped by 10 inches in recent days.

Lock closures
The are no lock closures at the moment but boaters should be aware of problems at:
County Lock, Reading: Picture by Bob Naylor©
Reading County Lock (106)
The floating pontoon at the entrance to County Lock is in a very unsafe state — BW have taken steps to prevent its use. Do not attempt to use it.
Crofton Flight (lock 60)
One of the ground paddles is out of action — as it has been for a considerable time.
Great Bedwyn Church Lock (64)
One of the ground paddles is still out of action - as it has been for 3 years.

Crofton waterpoint
Still out of action because of contamination. The nearest water is at Great Bedwyn Wharf or below Wootton Rivers Lock (51)

Rubbish disposal
There is no longer a waste disposal bin near the sanitary station at Hungerford  because of access problems for the Biffa 'one man' waste carts. The nearest rubbish disposal bins to Hungerford are at Kintbury and Great Bedwyn Wharf.
To report fly-tipping and any other problems with the waste disposal sites contact BW in Devizes: 01380 722859 or by email to: enquiries.kennetavon@britishwaterways.co.uk
